Sensei Kevin Veivers began his martial arts journey in the late 1960s with a background in boxing before discovering Kyokushin Karate in 1973. He began Kyokushinkaikan Karate in 1973 under Frank Everitt, obtaining his Shodan in 1979,
Kevin also trained under Shihan Tony Bowden and Shihan Cameron Quinn — two of the most influential figures in Australian Kyokushin — developing a deep technical foundation and an uncompromising commitment to the Kyokushin spirit.
He was awarded his Nidan (2nd Dan) in 1995 and his Sandan (3rd Dan) in 2005, representing over three decades of continuous dedication to the art. Under his leadership, the club has produced 14 Shodans, 6 Nidans, and 1 Sandan — a testament to the quality of instruction at Gold Coast North.
Sensei Kevin founded the Gold Coast North dojo in 1985 at Mermaid Beach, building a club culture grounded in respect, hard work, and the traditional values of Kyokushin. His approach balances technical precision with the fighting spirit that defines full-contact karate.

Senpai Janet Gardner
Assistant Instructor
Nidan — 2nd Degree Black Belt
Janet Gardner's Kyokushinkan journey began in 2005 at age 38, initially seeking self-defence, fitness and discipline — she fell in love with the art and philosophy. Janet attained her Shodan in 2011 and Nidan in 2016. "Karate changed my life, developing resilience, discipline and the spirit of NEVER GIVE UP."
Senpai Kym Ross
Assistant Instructor
Shodan — 1st Degree Black Belt
Kym Ross began training in the early 1980s at the Proserpine NQ dojo, mentored by some of Australia's finest Kyokushin practitioners including Hanshi Trevor Field, Shihan Wayne Hinschen, and Senseis Brad Madam and Michael Young. Graded to Shodan in October 1987, Kym competed at the Australian Open Full Contact Titles — first at the Sydney Opera House in 1983 — and fought at national level for the next ten years. A long-time member of the Queensland team from 1985, the highlight of his competitive career was representing Australia in 1987, competing in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii before retiring from competition in 1991. After an extended break for family reasons, Kym has returned to training at Gold Coast North following his relocation to the Gold Coast, bringing a wealth of elite competitive experience to pass on to the next generation of students.
